Welcome to the Specht Lab

The Specht Lab focuses on studies in Plant form and function.

We use traditional morphological techniques combined with molecular and evolutionary biology to study the natural diversity of plants and to help better understand the forces creating and sustaining this diversity.  Our research incorporates elements of systematics, developmental genetics and molecular evolution to study the patterns and processes associated with plant speciation and diversification.

Research Areas of Interest
Topics that we are currently investigating include:
  • Phylogenetics, species-level systematics, and evolution of Monocot lineages, including the tropical gingers (Zingiberales), Nolina (Ruscaceae) and California Allium
  • Floral development and evolution of the Zingiberales
  • Plastid evolution in grasses and gingers
  • Evolution of plant traits, including thermogenesis and carnivory

Recent Excitement (for ongoing excitement, check out our 'lab bling' page):
Dr. Tanya Renner graduates with a PhD in Plant Biology and receives a PERT postdoc at the University of Arizona.  Hooray Dr. Renner!!!
Ana Almeida highlighted on CNR webpage.

Congratulations 2012 Graduates!
